Lake Manyara National Park

A Jewel of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit

An Overview of Lake Manyara National Park

Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and diverse wildlife destinations. Covering approximately 330 square kilometers (127 square miles), the park’s namesake, Lake Manyara, dominates its landscape, accounting for two-thirds of its area.

Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for its breathtaking views, lush vegetation, and unique wildlife, including the famous tree-climbing lions. Despite being smaller than many of Tanzania’s other parks, its diversity of ecosystems and abundance of wildlife make it a must-visit destination.

The Surrounding Environment

Lake Manyara is situated within the Rift Valley, offering dramatic landscapes ranging from the towering escarpment to the expansive lake. The park is bordered by groundwater forests, open grasslands, and hot springs, providing a stark contrast to the arid savannahs that dominate much of northern Tanzania.

The nearby town of Mto wa Mbu is a cultural hub where visitors can explore local markets, taste traditional Tanzanian cuisine, and interact with various ethnic groups, including the Maasai, Chagga, and Iraqw people.

Wildlife: A Haven for Biodiversity

Lake Manyara National Park is teeming with wildlife, making it a paradise for safari enthusiasts. Some of the highlights include:

  • Tree-Climbing Lions: These rare lions are a signature feature of the park. They can often be seen lounging in acacia trees, a behavior thought to provide relief from the heat and biting insects.
  • Elephants: Large herds of elephants roam the park, often spotted near the lake or along forest trails.
  • Birdlife: The lake is home to over 400 bird species, including pink flamingos, pelicans, storks, and herons. During the wet season, the lake is covered in a shimmering pink hue as thousands of flamingos congregate to feed.

Other Wildlife: Giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, and various species of monkeys (including baboons and blue monkeys) are frequently spotted in the park.

Nature and Vegetation

Lake Manyara National Park boasts a striking variety of habitats in a compact area:

  • Groundwater Forests: These lush forests near the park’s entrance are fed by underground springs and are home to a variety of primates and birds.
  • Acacia Woodlands: A haven for herbivores like giraffes and zebras, as well as the park’s iconic tree-climbing lions.
  • Lake Shores: The alkaline waters of Lake Manyara attract vast flocks of waterbirds, including flamingos and pelicans, creating a spectacular sight.

Hot Springs (Maji Moto): Located in the southern part of the park, these geothermal springs bubble up from the earth, offering a fascinating natural attraction.

A Brief History of Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara became a national park in 1960, primarily to protect the area’s elephant population and its diverse ecosystems. The lake itself has been a vital resource for both wildlife and local communities for centuries, with its name derived from the Maasai word “emanyara,” referring to the Euphorbia plant used by the Maasai to build protective enclosures.

In more recent years, the park has gained recognition for its conservation efforts, particularly in preserving the habitats of its unique tree-climbing lions and rich birdlife.
